Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam was born 18 July 1975, better known by her stage name M.I.A. This British, Sri Lankan sensation is not only known for her eclectic, worldly music but is a mini mogul in her own right. Her resume includes such accomplishments as record producer, fashion designer, songwriter and best of all, entertainer. There is nothing she can’t do! With her modern, ‘gangsta’, 80’s, get up, it is hard not to notice her. The only way to describe her music would be hip hop, mixed with a bit of rock and punk topped off with beats that make it hard to sit still. Her fresh sound has been her meal ticket into the world of stardom. In 2008 she featured in the hit song ‘Swagga like Us’ featuring some of the biggest rappers of our time. Names like Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and T.I teamed up to bring us one of the most impressive songs of the year. She is packed full of political punch and don’t think you wont hear it in her music!
